Sometimes you just need a chalkboard animation.
I made a version of this animation for our old LiveType content collection a few years ago and I always thought it was pretty cool. It was a chalkboard background, and an animated eraser would quickly wipe across the screen, erasing everything that had been written on the chalkboard.
I decided to put that animation up on the site, because I was sure that somewhere, sometime, for some project, at least a few of you would find it useful.
I rounded up my old files but I had forgotten that that version wasn’t full 1080p HD. So I went ahead and re-created it in HD. Here is a demo of what you can do with it:
This effect will work in any editing software that supports QuickTime files that contain alpha channels.
Watch the video to see how it works, but basically I’ve given you two files; one is just a static chalkboard that lasts for two seconds (that you can lengthen) and the other is the eraser animation that actually erases a blank chalkboard onto the screen.
You just put the static chalkboard on the bottom track, whatever you want erased on the middle track (some text usually) and the eraser animation on the top track.
It’s a neat trick, as it appears that anything that was on the chalkboard gets erased, where in reality; it’s getting covered up by a blank chalkboard. You then do a cut to the static chalkboard clip and you can repeat the effect as many times as you want.

I hope you guys put them to good use. If you make something cool with it, post a link in the comments so everyone can see.
By the way, I created the animation in After Effects and I hope to do a tutorial on exactly how I did it. It’s pretty easy, and the technique could come in handy for other things so keep an eye out for it.
